Here at Fort Defiance, classroom fires are not a common thing. On Monday February 27, Mrs. Blackwell’s classroom heater caught on fire during her first block class. She stated that she heard a very loud popping noise and looked over at the heater and saw that there was fire in the bottom grate, smoke then began to roll out of the top.

Mrs. Converse, who was in the room at the time, evacuated the students and went down to the office to find one of the administrators. Mr. Shull came down, but by the time he got to the classroom the fire was out. After opening all of the windows to allow the smoke to disperse, the class was able to come back in and work again.
